West Side School’s Recycling Program
West Side School supports innovative resource
conservation activities such as the recycling program. The importance
of reducing landfill pressure, and developing good stewardship
skills among our future leaders, rank among the objectives.
The program is lead by a parent volunteer
who works with the sixth grade class and school. Sotoyome
Resource Conservation District (SRCD) currently sponsors the
program. The goal of the program is to reduce waste by encouraging
proper lunchtime recycling routines, and to produce compost and
worm-casting products from the food waste recycled.
The school facilitates a student-led effort
whereby older students mentor their younger counterparts, and
a RecyCool Club that offers educational guest speakers, contests,
and printed materials that support recycling on campus. Data is
gathered on the recyclables as well. The SRCD role also helped
the school receive a grant from the Rose Foundation to purchase
recycling materials and introduce food waste composting systems.
The
school placed approximately 800 lbs of food waste in worm bins
during the 2004-05 school year. And we were able to harvest 515
lbs of compost from last year which can be purchased at the Healdsburg
Farmers Market and Healdsburg Nursery. So far we've made $435
this calendar year. A job well done!
