Felta Education Foundation Case Statement

Felta Education Foundation is a non-profit education foundation whose mission is to support and enrich the education of every child at West Side School through a community-based effort.

Felta Education Foundation grew out of the West Side Parent and Community Organization (PCO). Members of the PCO recognized the need to expand the base of support for the school and saw an opportunity to involve local citizens into the educational needs of their community. Founding committee members include parents, teachers and the administrative staff of the school. The Parent and Community Organization received its 501(c)3 status in 2001, and the foundation began its efforts in September of 2003. All donations to Felta Education Foundation are tax-exempt. As state budget for education declines, public schools are forced to trim even the most fundamental components of their program. Felta Education Foundation believes that basic education is not enough. The arts, science, and a safe and nurturing physical environment play a profound effect on children’s well being and development. Felta Education Foundation strives to uphold the needs of the children of the West Side district through community involvement and financial support.

Enrichment Programs
Felta Foundation operates on the assumption that exposure to and hands-on experience with a wide range of educational opportunities enhances children’s intellectual and personal development. Therefore, the foundation’s efforts emphasize the arts, such as music, poetry, and visual arts; gardening and environmental studies; and cultural awareness and diversity.

Integrated
Programs, projects and events sponsored by Felta Education Foundation serve to augment an already strong West Side education and therefore must be integrated into existing curriculum and originate from the educational expertise within the school.

Supportive of School Mission
All efforts of Felta Foundation aim to further endorse the following mission of West Side School:

The West Side Union School District is an educational community that promotes academic, physical, and social growth for all students. We provide education programs of the highest quality within a supportive environment, respecting individual differences and cultural backgrounds. We encourage critical and creative thinking, and aim to strengthen each student's power of imagination. Our students develop the foundation for higher education, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning.
